Mindset Research

Over the past several years, there has been an increase in the research devoted to studying the process of learning to identify things that have a significant impact on the overall success of students as they progress through their education and into their careers. Research by Carol S. Dweck has shown there are two significant mindsets, or ways of thinking, in regards to learning and personal success, which are called fixed mindset and growth mindset. According to Dweck and many others, a student's ability to learn and be successful throughout their education is directly related to their mindset.
In my classroom, I fully support the growth mindset approach to teaching and encouraging students to learn, which is why I have included a page on my classroom website devoted to this particular philosophy. I believe the kinds of feedback students receive from adults has a significant impact on the way they view themselves as learners, so it is important we strive to teach them about the growth mindset at an early age. If they are able to start approaching their education as a set of learning experiences from which they receive feedback and have the opportunity to grow, then they will most certainly be able to achieve success throughout their education!
