My name is Megan Nico and I would like to start off by welcoming you to my web page! I hope you will find the information I have provided to be helpful, whether you are a student, parent/guardian, family member, or an educator.
I recently completed my second bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Health Promotion, through the Elementary Education Program at Michigan State University (MSU), and I am really looking forward to working as an intern teacher in the Fall 2016. In December 2013, I obtained my first bachelor’s degree in Biological Science through the College of Natural Science at MSU, which was an exciting and educational experience; however, I realized my true passions are for teaching and sharing knowledge to promote healthy living. I am a third generation teacher, following my mother and two grandmothers who also studied elementary education at MSU; and, a fourth generation Spartan, including my great grandmother, who studied home economics at MSU.
My experience as an educator and working with youth includes my long-held position as a student employee with the Michigan Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Education Program (MI GEAR UP), one of the pre-college programs at MSU, which I have worked with for nine years now. I have also done work as a tutor for a few MSU students and for the Educational Talent Search Program (ETS), which is another pre-college program at MSU. It was through my experiences with working at MI GEAR UP and ETS that I first discovered my passion for teaching. I remember the first time I sat down with a student to help them with their homework and, after I explained a few different approaches to solving the problem they were working on, they were able to do the entire problem on their own. All it took was a little bit of patience, understanding, and a willingness to take a different approach to help them learn the material and establish a sense of confidence in their own ability to solve similar problems. I’m looking forward to becoming a teacher, so I can continue encouraging students to take pride in their own learning by helping them identify a variety of strategies and resources, which will aid them in becoming advocates for their own success!
